Corporate Citizenship

DGI companies are sensitive to the needs of local communities before, during and after we invest. We believe we can achieve an adequate rate of return on our investments while respecting the local environment and reinvesting in communities.

We work together with local communities to identify the areas in which we can make the biggest difference. For example, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, DGI has invested in local schools and health care including:

  • Modernising operating rooms at hospitals in Mbuji Mayi
  • Upgrading the local hospital at Kolowezi
  • Building sanitary infrastructure for students at Lubumbashi University
  • Providing eye surgery and professional training to doctors and medical students
  • Contributing to the advancement of AIDS research

In 2007, we created The Gertler Foundation to expand our support of the communities in which DGI is active. The Foundation’s initial focus is on health care, education and care of the elderly, orphans and other vulnerable members of society.

In addition to engaging in philanthropic activities, DGI is committed to being a leader in business ethics and is determined to be “best in class” irrespective of our size. We welcome increased scrutiny of the extractive industry as a contribution to sound business practices.
